It’s Just Some Water

Posted on January 15, 2023January 15, 2023 by Charlie

I wrote this blog a few years ago, but never posted it, but I told this story several times over the last couple months. I’m not sure that the post below is written well, but it’s been sitting unposted for quite a while, so I thought it would be better to post it, than to let it sit another few years.

**********************************************************

Karen and I formed our business in 2008, before we were even married. We had both recently lost most of our income, and we needed to make ends meet.

We worked tirelessly for several years, and we saw a real potential for our business, but at one point it became a bit too much. Before taking if further, Karen and I set some objectives for ourselves, so we knew why we were working so hard. It made the hard work more rewarding.

At the top of the list was our “forever home.” I’m sure you can imagine that Karen had quite a few thoughts about the particulars.

About five years after starting our business we started looking for our new house. We looked long and far, but a lot of the houses we were interested in were in ill repair. As time went on, we looked further away from town.

Early 2013, after many frustrating weekends looking at houses that didn’t suit our needs, I found a parcel of land for us to look at, wondering if we might build a house instead. It was a little over 20 acres, but about 45 minutes south of Columbus.

Karen was interested, and we drove out to see it, not even bothering to arrange anything through our realtor. We found it, got out, and hiked around.

We hiked around the property. We were somewhere near the middle when we could start hearing a sound. Karen asked what it was, and my first thought was “oh no.”

I told her that we’d find it, and she asked what it was, but I wouldn’t tell her. I knew where it would lead, but wanted to surprise her. Hack and slash, we made it to the spot, and her eyes glazed over when she saw it. She saw the little waterfall, right in the middle of the property we were looking at.

I called our realtor from the spot, told him the listing number, and asked him to get it for us. He asked me how much we should offer. I told him to try to get it for us for as little as possible, but that the damage was already done, and that he should just do his best to get it for us, for as little as he could manage.

The waterfall is a small one. Depending on the time of year, it’s between one foot and two feet. Here’s a recent pic:

Karen loved the waterfall. Here’s a video she shot.
