Round 1 Clinical Trial Updates – Wednesday

I’ll post updates on this blog post if I have anything new to report throughout the day, so check this again for new content if you re-visit the blog.

Morning update… Karen had a tough night again, but marginally better than the first night. She had a fever, and got the chills. At one point she was loaded up with half a dozen blankets and a heating pad. Since we knew to expect the queasiness, we were able to star her on medication prior to the treatment yesterday, so she was able to keep her food down. We’ll take that as progress. They also gave her Tylenol early to counteract the fever, but she still had a struggle for about four hours or so. Her temperature was back to normal about half way through the night.

Her energy is much improved today, an she’s already up, fed, and getting ready to shower. She’s anxious to check out the farmer’s market here at the clinic. Apparently they set up a nice market every Wednesday around lunch. I’ll take a pic if I see anything interesting.

Evening update 7:45PM… The farmer’s market from earlier in the day was nice. Karen had a grilled chicken sandwich, and I had a brisket sandwich. We saw a large variety of the things you expect from a farmer’s market, but had to get back to the room for an appointment. It was a nice visit, and it was disappointing we didn’t have more time to stay. The market only lasts a few hours.

The treatment is hitting Karen just as hard tonight. She has the fever and chills, plus nausea. She’s managed to keep her small dinner of mac-n-cheese down so far, but I think it’s a struggle. The treatment illness tends to ease up around midnight, so she has a few more hours to go. She’ll feel better by morning, so this is when I’ll go back to the lodge for a quick shower. I’ll update tomorrow morning with anything new. Hopefully we get an opportunity to get Karen a massage. Her muscles are sore from the shivering, and they offer free massages to patients somewhere here on campus.
